The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) began when gold was found in American river by James W. Marshall, who was building a watermill there. The news soon spread, and during the coming years, California saw an influx of 300,000 new inhabitants, both from the USA and abroad, thus quickly elevating it to statehood.
Though many were attracted by dreams of gold and wealth, only a small percentage of prospectors struck it rich.
This coin shows a real gold piece just pulled out from the river. A few guys in the back are either cheering or getting angry at the sudden success of a fellow prospector. We can see a grizzly bear coming out of the woods and a couple of riflemen already aiming at it. There are more people coming both in wagons and in ships. Long story short—this is the GOLD RUSH.
